Who we are

Anavatau.com is operated by Anavatau Limited, a New Zealand business. We build and maintain this website to make Samoan heritage resources accessible to families, researchers, and communities worldwide.

If you have questions about this policy, contact us at: sioualofa@anavatau.com

What information we collect and why

1. Mailing list sign-ups

If you subscribe to our mailing list, we collect your name and email address. We use these to send you updates about new essays, resources, and events on the Anavatau Network. We do not sell or share your contact details with third parties. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any email we send you.

2. Heritage archive feedback

If you submit feedback on a heritage resource, we collect your name and email address. These are required; we do not act on anonymous feedback. Your details are used solely to follow up on your submission if needed. They are not displayed publicly, shared with third parties, or added to our mailing list without your consent.

3. Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand how visitors use the site - which pages are visited, where visitors come from, and general geographic distribution. GA4 collects this data using cookies placed in your browser.

The cookies GA4 sets include _ga and related identifiers. These cookies are used only for analytics and contain no personally identifiable information. Data is processed by Google in accordance with their privacy policy.

If you prefer not to be tracked, you can opt out using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

4. Server logs

Like all websites, our server automatically records basic technical information when you visit, including your IP address, browser type, and the pages you access. These logs are used for security and maintenance purposes only and are not used to identify individual visitors.

What we do not collect

We do not run a comments system. We do not require you to create an account to access the public site. We do not use advertising networks or sell data.

Cookies

Anavatau.com uses cookies for analytics only (Google Analytics 4, as described above). We do not use cookies for advertising, tracking across other sites, or any purpose beyond understanding how the site is used.

Your rights (New Zealand Privacy Act 2020)

Under the New Zealand Privacy Act 2020, you have the right to request access to personal information we hold about you, and to request a correction if that information is inaccurate. To make a request, contact us at sioualofa@anavatau.com.

If you are based in the European Union, additional rights under the GDPR may apply. Contact us if you wish to exercise these rights.

Data retention

Mailing list data is retained until you unsubscribe. Feedback submissions are retained for as long as they remain relevant to the management of the archive. Analytics data is retained according to Google Analytics' default retention settings (currently 14 months).
